Over the years, I've been asked hundreds of home improvement questions, and I’ve noticed that many are the result of the same mistakes. That’s understandable.  While home improvements can be both exciting and exhilarating, they’re not something you do every day.  Most projects travel down a long runway on the way to completion and pitfalls are sometimes too easy to avoid.

What do home inspections mean for home sellers?

The process of selling a home can make the seller feel like they’re living in a fishbowl, with potential buyers and real estate agents evaluating, judging and otherwise picking apart the place they’ve called home for years. Just before the actual sale comes the most intense scrutiny of all: the home inspection.

Green living is more popular than ever, and a home’s green features, finishes and systems can make all the difference when it comes to selling a home. To be competitive and to ensure you get the best price possible for your home, it makes sense to assess its sustainable, energy-saving features right along with traditional highlights like the kitchen, baths and master suite – and then present those findings to potential home buyers.

Recycling at your New Home! - Tuesday, February 22, 2011

 Consider This

  • We throw away enough aluminum cans each year to rebuild a commercial airline fleet every 3 months!
  • Recycling one aluminum can saves enough energy to run your TV for 3 hours!
  • We throw away enough office paper each year to build a 12 foot high wall of paper from New York to Los Angeles.
  • We throw away enough plastic soda bottles each year to circle the earth four times.
  • The U.S. is the #1 trash-producing country in the world at approximately 1,600 pounds per person/year.
  • By recycling 1 ton of paper, we save 17 trees, 7,000 gallons of water, 463 gallons of oil, 3 cubic yards of landfill space and enough energy to heat an average home for 6 months!!!
  • Recycling: It’s the right thing to do and it’s easy to participate.

Do a search online to find out if you have recycling in your neighborhood.  if you don't have curbside recycling first call your local municipality and demand it, then find out where there are collection locations near you and take it there.  Locations are easy to find online.  Help stop the waste!

Take "Fido" for a walk - Thursday, August 26, 2010

When you are expecting a showing on your home, remember to make arrangements for your pets.  Potential buyers want to see the entire home with out distractions.  A barking dog can make for an uneasy showing and bring the comfort level way down for the buyers.  Other distractions are exotic pets such as birds, spiders, snakes, and other large reptiles.  In Florida we may have daily contact with these animals outside, but very few homeowners want to see their worst fear inside the home that they may buy.  So Take your dog(s) for a walk and place out of site any pets that may be a distraction to what could be a possible offer on your home.

Radon Gas - Tuesday, August 24, 2010

Radon Gas - In January of 2004, the HUD home inspection form for FHA loans (HUD 92564-CN) was modified to include information on radon content in indoor air. This form (updated again in June of 2006) is mandatory for all FHA-insured mortgages, which means a good portion of buyers may request a radon inspection as part of the home inspection process. To find a radon service professional, visit www.epa.gov/iaq/whereyoulive.html.
